Vanderbilt Skins the Wildcats

This one surprised me and not because of Vanderbilt winning the game but in their dominance of Kentucky. I listened to it on the radio and I actually had to call a friend to have them turn the game on and verify the score. I'm so proud of the Commodores and hope that they continue to win and impress and go far in March.

Revenge, oddly enough, wasn’t the motivation Vanderbilt took into Tuesday night’s Southeastern Conference matchup with visiting Kentucky.

Embarrassment? That was another story.

Still stinging from their performance in a double-overtime loss in Lexington a month ago — a loss that ended their 16-game season-opening winning streak — the Commodores turned the tables in a big way and sent the Wildcats home on the bad end of a 93-52 beatdown.

Kentucky Wildcats Beats L.S.U. in a Great Game

Kentucky quarter back Andre Woodson got a hug from his mother, Robin Woodson, after he led the Cats to victory over LSU yesterday.(David Stephenson)

If LSU got its Bluegrass Miracle in 2002, then Kentucky got its Bluegrass Euphoria last night.

"It's a sweet win," said Rich Brooks, the happy and deserving UK coach. "I know that."

Kentucky football fans Kateland Fink, left, and her father Tony Fink relax on the field after Kentucky upset No. LSU 43-37 (James Crisp)

• LSU lost. Why should we be surprised? What a wacky year in college football, and it just got a little crazier tonight with Kentucky knocking off No. 1-ranked LSU 43-37 in three overtimes. The door is wide-open now for Cal to move into the No. 1 spot in the polls, and more importantly, the top spot in the first BCS standings when they come out on Sunday. The Bears are tied right now 7-7 with Oregon State.

• To beat the No. 1-ranked team in the country, you need special performances from unsung players. Kentucky got a clutch all-around game from freshman running back Derrick Locke, who was filling in for the injured Rafael Little. Locke, who was initially recruited as a sprinter on Kentucky's track team, showed his toughness and vision with some hard-nosed inside runs to keep the LSU defense honest. But it was his pick-up of blitzing LSU defensive end Tyson Jackson that gave Andre' Woodson just enough time to throw the game-winning touchdown to Steve Johnson in the third overtime.
