Red Velvet Cake Recipe

1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
Red food coloring
1 tsp. vanilla
2 tbs. cocoa
1 tsp salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 1/4 cup flour (sifted 2 or 3 times)
1 tbs. vinegar
1tsp. soda

Cream shorteningand sugar until fluffy. Add eggs and red food coloring in a cup and make a paste. Add shortening, sugar and egg mixture. Add salt. Put vanilla in buttermilk. Add slowly to mixture alternating with flour. Put vinegar and soda in cup, mix. Add to mixture. Bake in two 9 inch layer pans in 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes. Frost and store in refrigerator. Cut with a string or sharp knife to retain velvet texture.

FROSTING
1 cup milk
5 tbs flour
1 cup butter
1 cup powdered sugar (sifted)
1 tsp. vanilla

Cook butter, powdered sugar and vanilla until thick. Cool in refrigerator. Beat mixture and add flour and milk a little at a time. When cake is cooled, spread on frosting. Frosting will be like whipped cream.
