Our Nashville Symphony has been nominated for two Grammies

The Nashville Symphony has been nominated for two Grammys for its recording of works by American composer Joan Tower, which was conducted by Music Advisor Leonard Slatkin.
"Made in America" was nominated in the categories of Best Classical Album and Best Classical Contemporary Composition.



"It was an honor for the Nashville Symphony to release a CD of works by Joan Tower, who is by far one of the most exciting composers of our time," said Alan D. Valentine, President and CEO of the Nashville Symphony. "We are thrilled to be in the company of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, among others, with these two important Grammy nominations."

The Schermerhorn Symphony Center offers building tours, free of charge, given by highly-trained and enthusiastic volunteer docents, some members of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra League. Tours will begin promptly from the West Atrium and will last approximately 50 minutes. No reservations are required for these tours if your group is under 15 people. For groups of more than 15 people, please call the Schermerhorn Symphony Center Tour Hotline at 615.687.6580 and leave a message with details about the group and contact information for scheduling. Please allow at least 72 hours advanced notice for your tour to be scheduled.

All scheduled tours are subject to change depending upon previously scheduled event activity, we therefore highly recommend that you call us prior to arriving for a tour.

Elvis Costello and Jack White with Bob Dylan in Nashville

Elvis Costello and the White Stripes' Jack White made surprise appearances during Bob Dylan's Wednesday night, September 19, concert at the Ryman Auditorium. Although he and Dylan are officially scheduled to begin a tour together on Saturday, September 22, in Duluth, Ga., Costello told the crowd he asked to open the show after learning Dylan was playing at the Ryman.



Opening with "(The Angels Wanna Wear My) Red Shoes," Costello walked onstage unannounced and performed a nine-song acoustic set that included "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding" and "Veronica." During Dylan's set, White showed up with an electric guitar and sang "Meet Me in the Morning," a song from Dylan's Blood on the Tracks album. After White provided the lead vocals for most of the song, Dylan joined him at the microphone for the final verse.



The White Stripes last week canceled all of their tour dates through the end of the year after announcing that drummer Meg White is unable to travel because of acute anxiety. Jack White produced Loretta Lynn's critically-acclaimed album, Van Lear Rose, released in 2004.

Sunday Night in Nashville

We went to the last half of the Shakespeare in the Park on a recent Sunday night. We saw the Merry Wives of Windsor and it was so funny and the acting and the way the drew the audience in was incredible. It was a wonderful show with a good turn out. See ya next year Shakes...

We walked around downtown afterwards. We enjoyed the beauty and the architecture of the Schermerhorn and Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

After all that we visited Lower Broadway, taking in the neon lights with our newly arrived German visitors. We listened to music from the sidewalk and soaked up the atmosphere and we let the spirit of Nashville move around us and whisper in our ears.

Nashville Symphony closes out summer festival

This weekend is your last chance to catch the Nashville Symphony before the musicians close out their busiest season ever and take a much-needed summer break. Tonight and Saturday, the ensemble performs the third and final concert in its First Tennessee Summer Festival with a program highlighting Bach, Mozart and Mendelssohn. The conductor will be Scott Yoo, music director of the San Luis Obispo Mozart Festival; he'll also serve as the featured soloist on Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3.

Just A Thought

Nashville has some outstanding architecture and I enjoy walking or driving around and seeing all that we have here. Some of the true jewels we save and preserve and others I see in different states of repair or slowly wearing. I'm struck by all the Greek Revival architecture we have in the area and how it is so ironic that we don't have the largest Greek population and yet they have influenced so much of our city and state. Thinking of how we are the "Athens of the South" and how we have cities and towns around the state that bear the name of Greek cities.

So many people that visit Nashville and Tennessee don't realize all of our history. Mind you, I don't get upset over it because I don't know all of the history of other cities and states but I wonder if the think Nashville is only like Hee Haw or something like that. We are so much more then that and yep the Schermerhorn Symphony Center is another jewel for Nashville.

So the next time you are out and about in Nashville, take the time to realize there is a lot more then you might think. Nashville is such a great city and is much more than a stereotype and when you see our beauty and grace while understanding how we have a much more complex history then just a bunch of country bumpkins....you will see why people love living here and visiting here. You will see a great city to be proud of .
