Volkswagen and BMW cuts jobs

German automakers BMW AG and Volkswagen AG said Tuesday that they would put thousands of German employees on reduced working hours as they slow production in the deepening economic downturn.

Volkswagen said it would put about two-thirds of its employees in Germany — some 60,000 workers — on shorter hours for five days late in the last week of February.

The company said some areas, such as component production and research and development, would be exempted.

BMW said a total of approximately 26,000 employees would work shorter times on some days in February and March, with workers at four plants affected. The company employs some 75,000 people in Germany.

German manufacturers' exports have been declining sharply, and demand at home also has been falling as the economy — Europe's biggest — sinks into recession.

Watch "The MasterSingers of Nuremburg" live online from Bayreuth, Germany

Germany's annual opera festival devoted to the works of Richard Wagner has set a price and it's a high one — $77.

The festival will show opera live online for the first time during the performance of Die Meistersinger (The MasterSingers of Nuremberg) that opens the event July 27.

Only 10,000 will be able to sign up for the online video. There will also be a free viewing in the Bayreuth public square.

The concept is a new twist for the opera world, where companies are looking for ways to develop young audiences.

In honor of Memorial Day weekend....I am reposting this about the 100th Bombers Group

I posted this back in September but I wanted to show it again to honor these men on Memorial Day weekend.

These amazing men stayed at our hotel recently and they told stories of their time in the war and they had pictures and books that were written by men involved in the battles and flying these missions that most of us would wimp out over.

I have to agree with Tom Brokaw, that this was the "greatest generation." Thank you gentlemen for your service and love for our great nation.

7 APR 1945 Buchen -- one of the last raids on Germany and on the crews 25th mission, the aircraft 43-38514, "E-Z GOIN'" was involved in a mid-air collision with an ME-109. Crew managed to bomb target and return to Thorpe Abbotts despite the loss of parts of the vertical fin and the horizontal stabilizer. This is the aircraft pictured on the front cover of "CENTURY BOMBERS" by Le Strange and Brown.

I met Rob Larsen, sone of Norm Larsen, while at the hotel and he is so passionate about these guys and their stories. Great people and I plan to buy a book soon with more info about them.
