Another 7 star hotel in Dubai?

Hotel designed by Sybarite Architects would feature a two-storey jungle at the top of the 28-storey building.

Developers are said to be hovering over this unique 7-star hotel in Dubai designed by Sybarite Architects after a major hotel group showed interest in putting up the funds.

The US$350m (£173m) 28-floor Aperiron building would be 300m from the Dubai coast and accessible only by boat or helicopter.

As well as 438 luxury suites, it would contain a spa, an art gallery, and an underwater restaurant with views into a surrounding lagoon.

To top it off, the top two floors would house a temperature-controlled butterfly jungle with tropical species.

Its unique structural design has not yet garnered a nickname, but Building staff have variously named it ‘The Rollmop’, ‘The Pringle’ and ‘The Funnel’. Any better suggestions should be posted below.

I read this book and thought it was interesting in the concept of taking a trip like that with my dad but also in the adventures and misadventures that they shared. I truly enjoyed it and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys stories of travel and relationships.

My Old Man and the Sea by David Hays and Daniel Hays



As a child, David Hays regarded sailing around Cape Horn as the ultimate adventure. Now, in middle age, he makes the voyage with his 24-year-old son, hoping to regain a youthful perspective on life. Daniel, just out of college, wanted time to think about commitment to a career. Together, they built a 25-foot sloop, Sparrow, and set out across the Caribbean, navigating by compass and sextant. Sparrow carried neither motor nor radar, only a two-way, short-range radio. Father and son take turns giving their accounts of the 17,000-mile voyage.

Their course was through the Panama Canal, then south by way of the Galapagos and Easter Islands. On day 179, they passed the Horn, having made 230 miles in 36 hours without being able to search the sky for sights because of the weather; in return for that feat of navigation, Dan became the captain. When in Seattle, Ride the SLUT

There's a story going around South Lake Union, but a spokeswoman for Vulcan, Paul Allen's development company, says it's just an urban legend.

That aside, the story that the neighborhood's streetcar line now under construction was called the South Lake Union Trolley until the powers that be realized the unfortunate acronym -- SLUT -- seems here to stay.

Officially, it's now the South Lake Union Streetcar. But the trolley name already has caught on, and in the old Cascade neighborhood in South Lake Union, they're waiting for the SLUT.

At the Kapow! Coffee house on Harrison Street, they're selling T-shirts that read "Ride the SLUT."

"We're welcoming the SLUT into the neighborhood," said Jerry Johnson, 29, a part-time barista. Johnson said the T-shirts were done just for fun, but they seem to have tapped into something: The first 100 sold out in days and now orders for the next 100 are under way.
Behind the ribbing is a little resentment about the changes some residents feel have been pushed on them.

"There was a meeting with representatives from the city several years ago," Johnson recalled. "They asked us what we could do for you. Most people raised their hands and said 'affordable housing,' " he said. "Then the people from the city huddled together -- 'whisper, whisper, whisper,' -- and they said, 'How about a trolley?' "

With two of our newest restaurants in Nashville, the Pfunky Griddle and Muddea's Chicken and Waffles, having fun and unique names it just led my mind to wander a bit. Just imagine if they joined forces and named their combined business....

Sunday Night in Nashville

We went to the last half of the Shakespeare in the Park on a recent Sunday night. We saw the Merry Wives of Windsor and it was so funny and the acting and the way the drew the audience in was incredible. It was a wonderful show with a good turn out. See ya next year Shakes...

We walked around downtown afterwards. We enjoyed the beauty and the architecture of the Schermerhorn and Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

After all that we visited Lower Broadway, taking in the neon lights with our newly arrived German visitors. We listened to music from the sidewalk and soaked up the atmosphere and we let the spirit of Nashville move around us and whisper in our ears.

At 52, country superstar says she's finally happy to just be herself

Reba McEntire is conducting business today at her impressive Starstruck Entertainment building on Music Row, but she is dressed in her stage wear.

But instead of a sparkly gown, she wears a pair of jeans and a trendy blue V-neck. This is Reba McEntire 2007.

After living largely in Los Angeles for the past six years to shoot the WB/CW sitcom Reba, McEntire returned to her home in Sumner County after the show was cancelled late last year.

Instead of going Hollywood, McEntire returned to her roots. Gone is the over-the-top image created by her big hair and big production shows featuring numerous costume changes.

It was obviously an image that worked. McEntire has sold 38 million albums, recorded 33 No. 1 hits and collected two Grammys. She's won seven Country Music Association awards, including a record-tying (with Martina McBride) four trophies in the female vocalist category.

"I used to sit in the audience of the CMAs and just wait for the moment when she would walk out onstage in her big gown and big hair, and you knew you were watching a superstar," McBride says. "Her command of the stage is something I strive to have."

But about five years ago, McEntire ditched the cumbersome outfits and costume changes to be more comfortable onstage. More important, she wanted to have more time to talk to her audience. "Because of the Reba TV show, I was a character that people fell in love with because she was a normal person," she says.

In the past, onstage she played the characters in the songs — "I was never Reba until I talked." But now, she says, "I can play Reba and sing the song with my heart."

"I love being 52. I get to be me now, and I don't have to please anybody. I please myself first, and I love myself first. Because if I can love me, I am more open to everybody accepting me the way I am, and I don't have to pretend."

The flashy big-haired image wasn't really who she was, she says, but a stylist's idea of what she should look like.

"I went for it because I had no taste. I grew up with hand-me-downs all my life. I had no idea what I was wanting to wear."

Can I Have Your Autograph?

Native Nashvillian, Jackson Miller, gives his perspective on something that I have always found really endearing about our fair city…

I think that the residents of Nashville may be the least star-struck people on the planet. In Nashville, famous people are no big deal. It is neat to see someone famous, but I don’t know any Nashville natives that ask strangers for autographs or pictures. It is cool to see someone famous and all, but I am not going to go out of my way to say hi. Sure, if I am standing next to someone in line I will say hi if I recognize them and am fond of their work. More often than not I don’t even realize who it was until much later. I think it is just ingrained in my psyche that it is not a big deal.

This also reminds me of the whole Martina McBride debacle over at Suburban Turmoil last week. Yeah, they have fame, fortune, and talent (for the most part), but they have the same problems and human frailties that we all do. Um, and the reason it reminded me of Martina, is that I was in line with her at Wal-Mart a few years back and she was buying a 12-roll industrial package of toilet paper. Just a regular human being like me whose gotta schlep out to buy some TP. I hadn’t thought about that until last week’s, er, bathroom incident.
But I digress…
Anyway, I think it is great that our celebs can hang out and just be themselves without being harassed.

Of course, for those who simply can’t keep their enthusiasm under control, he has a great idea…
I think that the proper response to seeing someone famous should be a question on the drivers license test. If you want to live her(e) you gotta know how to act.

If you were to run into one of your most beloved celebrities at the store, a restaurant, etc., how would you handle it? Would you engage them?

It was a nice day with perfect weather, great food and company. The food, as always, was sheer bliss and brought on talk of food and how, when done properly, it is just a mind-boggling event.

I look forward to visiting this amazing establishment...again and again.

Scented Air in the Hotels

We use Scented Air in our hotel to create a certain smell and a certain ambiance. People seem to like it and it is used company-wide. It all varies on where the hotel is in the city and that determines what "scent" your hotel gets. Some that we use are Urban Hotel and Suburban Hotel. I know we have more but I don't know what they are.

They created one for a museum that had a dinosaur roaring out towards people. The name of that scent...you guessed it..."Dinosaur Breath." Read more about the museum and the bad breath at the link.
