Nashville honky-tonks and the Nashville Experience

Everyone thinks of our honky-tonks when they think of Nashville and that's for a good reason. There is a good bit of history that ties Nashville's music legends to the honky-tonks. Back when Tootsie's Orchid Lounge was called Mom's and "Tootsie" bought it in 1960. So many legends worked there singing or drinking as they struggled to make it in the music business.

Tootsie's is the most famous of all the honky-tonks but there are some other ones on the same strip that carry as much weight. Robert's Western World, Legend's Corner, The Stage, Bluegrass Inn, Rippy's and more. Each one has it's own style and flair so be sure to visit each one and see which one is right for you. Sometimes the music is mediocre but days and nights it is some really great music. These are some of the best places to hear up and coming as well as some established artists.

90 minutes at Robert's Western World

Went down to Robert's Western World last night for a little while and sat a couple of stools down from Rhonda Vincent. Wow, she is a beautiful lady and she is sooo talented. I had some Michelob Ultras and I received a free sandwich from the bartender because some guy didn't wait for his order so I received a ham sandwich with fries. Okay, it wasn't gourmet or fine dining but for a lil honky-tonk food, it was good and helped keep the beer in check.

Great times as the crowds flooded in from the CMA Awards at the Sommet Center. Talked just a itty bitty bit with Rhonda, Manuel came in and the Travis Mann Band absoutely tore the place apart. They all are so much fun and the new guitarist really fit right in to their fine grooviphonics. Dig the rockabilly!

I love Nashville and I think this is the kind of thing that truly only happens here in Nashville. Oh, oh yeah...the irony is that I don't think anyone recognized Rhonda Vincent. She sat at the bar with a couple of folks, ate a cheeseburger and enjoyed the music. I think the only time someone besides me talked to her, was to tell her they wanted a drink and to help get the bartender.

Merle Haggard sues Green Train

Country star Merle Haggard has sued an environmental awareness group, claiming it illegally used his name and likeness to raise money.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Chancery Court against the Green Train, a Nashville-based organization, and its founder, Robert K. Wolf. It seeks unspecified compensatory damages.

Haggard claims in the lawsuit that the group forged his signature and exaggerated his involvement with the organization to solicit money. He says his reputation could be irreparably harmed by continued association with the group.

The Green Train bills itself as a nonprofit that educates the public about environmental issues. Its concert-and-train tour scheduled to depart Portland, Ore., in April and travel through 28 states on a six-week whistle-stop tour with several concerts along the way before ending in Washington D.C.

These should be funny to hear. Cledus is a wacky and goofy music man who can make us laugh with his remakes of country hits. Below are some of his newest songs. Beverly Keel reported today that he was taping the video for his song "Waitin on Obama" which is based around the sound of "Waitin on a Woman" by Brad Paisley.

Cledus T. Judd has recorded "Waitin' On Obama," to the tune of Brad Paisley's hit, "Waiting on a Woman." The lyrics include, "Waitin' to vote down at City Hall/Watchin' gas go up and the stock/market fall, when he asked me/You waitin' on Obama/I said I guess, how 'bout you/He said son, ever since George W./I've been waitin'/Waitin' on Obama."

The album will be titled Polyrically Correct" and contain "Garth Must Be Busy," a parody of Brooks & Dunn's "God Must Be Busy," and "I Saw Garth Today," a parody of George Strait's "I Saw God Today."

Another sign of changes in the music industry

Due to a slow economy and a recording industry that seems to be trying to figure out how to sell albums right now, Equity Music Group in Nashville is suspending operations. People don't seem to be spending money on albums right now and something else that seems to be changing the industry is the ability to get the music without having to buy a full album.

I hate to see this happen but hopefully the business will go on and we'll see growth in Nashville and the music industry again. Read more below and the complete story in the Tennessean newspaper.

Little Big Town and the folks from Equity Music Group

Nashville-based independent music label Equity Music Group said Tuesday that it was suspending its operations immediately, blaming a challenging economic climate.

"Our investors tried to a find a way to keep the doors open at Equity, but with a struggling industry, an overall decline in discretionary spending by consumers and a total freeze on the capital markets" the board made this decision, said Tim Wipperman, the label's president.

Equity Music Group began in 2003, co-founded by country artist Clint Black and Mike Kraski, a former Sony/Nashville executive. The label was best known for once representing the country music group Little Big Town.
