Dr. Barbara Hahn, Distinguished Professor of German at Vanderbilt University, will explore the informal gatherings of Jewish women in Germany before Hitlers military occupation in Europe. The talk will examine the influence of these gatherings that hosted artists, scholars, and politicians whose cultural discussions laid the foundation for the flourishing European culture of today.

Designed for children ages 5 to 13, the Frist Center will host a holiday collage art-making activity. Those wishing to participate will have the opportunity to enter their artwork in a holiday card contest. After all of the artwork is reviewed and a winner is chosen, a reproduction of the winning entry will be used as the front image of the Frist Center's 2007 holiday card. In addition, the winner will receive an ArtQuest journal and fifty holiday cards with envelopes to send to friends and family.

Chess as Art?
Marcel Duchamp, one of the founding members of The Socit Anonyme once asked, "And why isn't my playing chess an art activity?"

Good question. There are two chess sets available during regular Frist Center hours.

Lon Chaney's The Phantom Of The Opera (1925) marked the actor's hard-earned entry into full-fledged superstardom. The film was both the stepping off point for Chaneys run as a superstar at MGM and the prototype for the horror film cycle at Universal in the 1930s. Currently on display in the Conte Community Arts Gallery is Jim McGuire: The Nashville Portraits.

This exhibition pays homage to Nashville's country music heritagethrough 60 black and white photographs of beloved artists such as Johnny Cash,Dolly Parton, Waylon Jennings, and Bill Monroe. Taken by Jim McGuire, one of theindustry's most celebrated photographers, these penetrating portraits havehelped define the public's perception of countless musicians.

Brushed with Light: Masters of American Watercolor from the Brooklyn Museum alsoremains on view in the Upper-Level Galleries. Composed of approximately 80 worksby artists such as William Trost Richards, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent,Arthur Dove, and Edward Hopper, this exhibition documents the evolution ofwatercolor as an artistic tool while following the development of landscapeimagery in America.

This exhibition has been organized by the Brooklyn Museum.
