Airstream Inc. and Kampgrounds of America partner up

Three campgrounds across America are getting some new tenants, but campers need not be jealous of their shiny silver neighbors — the Airstream rigs are for rent.

Kampgrounds of America Inc. and Airstream Inc. are placing 25 of the company's most popular model trailers at KOA campgrounds in Las Vegas, Bar Harbor, Maine, and Key West, Fla., letting travelers rent the recognizable trailers like hotel rooms.

"A lot of people, frankly, don't know we're still in business because the trailers have looked largely the same over the years," Airstream chief executive Bob Wheeler said. "We know there's a demand — so it's just a matter of providing it in an easy and successful way in a great setting."
Airstreams are instantly identifiable by their long, rounded shape — imagine a giant aluminum Twinkie — and have been a historic part of American culture since the company began manufacturing trailers in the 1930s.

Wheeler said the company has been looking for years for ways for introduce potential customers to the iconic trailers. Until now, people have had to purchase an Airstream or know someone who owns one to sleep in its silvery confines.

The models at the campgrounds — the 25-foot Flying Cloud — retail for about $67,000, Wheeler said.

"It's a trial experience," he said.

Wheeler and Shane Ott, chief operating officer of Kampgrounds of America, said the Airstream rentals do more than just familiarize customers with the cushy amenities of a high-end recreational vehicle.

The University of Tennessee creates an organic farming initiative

As U.S. organic food production is increasing at a steady pace of about 20 percent a year, UT has launched an organic farming initiative to "jump-start organics in Tennessee" and "help keep family farms in the family," said Annette Wszelaki, UT Extension commercial vegetable specialist.

Organic production can increase profits by reducing the use of off-farm inputs, such as fertilizers and pesticides, she said.

There are currently 21 acres under cultivation at the 90-acre organic research farm at UT's Agricultural Research and Education Center off of John Sevier Highway. Fourteen acres are under transition to organic farming. It typically takes three years for a plot of land to be certified suitable for organic production, Wszelaki said.

The organic research farm was dedicated to organic crop production in fall 2007, and crops tested have been mainly vegetable crops, including carrots, beets, peppers, tomatoes, squash and watermelon.

"Nothing has been unsuccessful," Wszelaki said, noting that the first year was low-disease, which is "unusual for any farm system."

Meanwhile, the Organic and Sustainable Crop Production program is a statewide initiative aimed at involving more Tennessee farmers in organic production.

Radius10 has closed....no, no, NOOOO

The paragraph below was in the Nashville Scene blog "Bites." I sure hope that Jason stays in Nashville and continues to work his culinary magic. This restaurant was truly a magical place to spend an evening. Nice view of the city from the patio, incredible and fun food and the chef bar that overlooked the kitchen. God I will miss this place...

Within the past hour, a recorded phone message at Radius10 was updated to announce the restaurant's closing. "It is with great regret and great memories that Radius10 has decided to leave The Gulch," the voice says. "Sadly, the level of business since the economic downturn is not sufficient to sustain our operation over the long haul."

The Alleycat Lounge will howl no more

Another of Nashville’s popular eateries has decided to close its doors. After nearly six years in operation, well-loved East Nashville restaurant Alleycat Lounge closed on Jan. 19.

Ferdinand the Bull charges into Nashville

The immortalized story of Ferdinand the Bull, which is rooted in the 1936 children's tale The Story of Ferdinand, is Nashville Ballet's latest Learning Curves education and outreach effort for area school kids and families.

Nashville Ballet announces the premiere of a brand-new children’s ballet, Ferdinand the Bull. Sunday, January 25, 2009, the public is invited to attend the premiere of this new ballet. The 2:00 pm matinee at Massey Hall will include live music and narration. Nashville Ballet has collaborated with Belmont University for over a decade to create original children’s ballets.

This event is free to the public, (No tickets required) although attendees are encouraged to bring a new or “gently-read” children’s book to donate to Book Em!.

Meet Ferdinand, the mild mannered star of our newest children's ballet, which is based on The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf. As the story unfolds you will be charmed by a lovable bull that would much rather sit and smell the flowers of the field than fight and fuss like all the others. Through Ferdinand's gentle spirit, we humorously learn to appreciate and embrace what truly makes each of us special and realize that, sometimes, "stopping to smell the flowers" can be far more beneficial than "putting up a fight"!

This production was choreographed by Nashville Ballet Artistic Director Paul Vasterling, with original music by Belmont professor Mario DaSilva. This performance will be narrated by Brian Hull. The original costuming and set design is by Nashville Ballet dancer and designer, Eric Harris. His designs were inspired by the Cubist paintings of renowned Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso.

Nashville Ballet’s Children’s Ballets and Ballet Story-times are presented free of charge. Promoting literacy through the art of dance, the Children’s Ballets are based upon cultural folk tales and fairy tales enabling the Ballet to bring books to life, stimulate children’s creativity and curiosity, and encourage them to seek out books of this nature on their own. Each year Nashville Ballet works with Book ‘Em to target public schools and deserving service organizations with customized programs combining both literacy and dance.

Jessica Burkhart, former Nashvillian, has a book published at age 21

Jessica Burkhart loves her horses. But scoliosis — and subsequent spinal fusion surgery — ended her equestrian career before she hit her teen years.

So, she started writing ... and writing ... and writing.

More than 100 magazine articles later, the former Dieterich resident is releasing her first book. “Take the Reins” is the first installment in the eight-part Canterwood Crest series. It is being released Jan. 27 by Simon & Schuster.

The protagonist in “Take The Reins” and subsequent tales of Canterwood Crest is Sasha, a small-town girl who attends an exclusive Connecticut boarding school. Burkhart said Sasha has more than a little bit of Jessica in her.

TRT Holdings attempts to takeover the Gaylord Entertainment Company

Analysts say some investors balked at the so-called takeover attempt, while others are open to a new direction for the hotelier.

“Anyone looking at stock returns can see this company has not done well,” says Nell Minow, editor of The Corporate Library. “The question is whether anybody that challenges it can do better.”

Texas billionaire Robert Rowling, owner of investment firm TRT Holdings, which owns luxury hotel brand Omni Hotels, told shareholders last week that he planned to nominate himself and three other directors to Gaylord’s board, criticizing the company’s poor performance and bad business decisions.

Mr. Rowling said, "We believe that we can assist the Board and management team in their efforts to create value for all Gaylord shareholders. We approached Gaylord's Board and management in an attempt to discuss improving the Company's financial and operating performance and were rebuffed. As a result, we have decided to take our message directly to Gaylord's shareholders. TRT seeks to bring a disciplined business approach, accountability to shareholders, and a fresh perspective based on industry experience. We believe that Gaylord's Board and management have failed to adequately deliver in these areas."

Tennessee Agriculture and Farms win awards

Winners of the Young Farmer and Rancher Achievement Award, Discussion Meet, and Excellence in Agriculture competitions were announced at the American Farm Bureau Federation’s 90th annual meeting in San Antonio.

Young farmers from around the United States competed for the awards by demonstrating knowledge of and achievement in agriculture, as well as commitment to promoting the agriculture industry.

Donald and Alicia Blankenship of Tennessee won the Achievement Award. They are the winners of a 2009 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck, courtesy of Dodge, and a $1,000 product voucher from Valvoline. They also received free registration to the 2009 AFBF YF&R Leadership Conference in Sacramento, Calif.

Dan and Cara June Strasser of Tennessee won the Excellence in Agriculture Award. They received a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck and free registration to the YF&R Leadership Conference.

Tennessee is the No. 1 state for motorcoach travel in 2009.

The designation comes from Byways Magazine, a bimonthly publication aimed at motorcoach charter and tour planners. It means the state is projected to have more motorcoach travel in 2009 than any other state.

Helping attract motorcoach travel are the Smoky Mountains, Bristol Motor Speedway, the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, music attractions in Nashville and Memphis and the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis.

Following Tennessee in the 2009 projections are Virginia, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania.
